The Battle of Midway in June 1942 was the most decisive battle in the Pacific theatre in the Second World War. As a result of their defeat, the Japanese lost the initiative they had gained at Pearl Harbour 6 months earlier and never re-gained it. The loss of four aircraft carriers was a blow from which Japan never fully recovered. For the next 3 years the Americans advanced steadily, island by island, towards mainland Japan.

And yet it was all meant to be so different. The Japanese plan was to take Midway, held and heavily fortified by the Americans, and use it as a launching-pad for the invasion of Hawaii. They were unaware, however, that their codes had been cracked by the Americans. This film provides a straightforward account of events leading up to the battle, of the battle itself and of its aftermath. Most of the film material is not contemporary and seems to have been taken from Hollywood blockbusters. But there are interesting interviews with participants on both sides and these give some idea of what it must have been like to have been there at the time.

As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.

Description: The final film in the 'Confessions' series took Timmy Lea and co. to Funfrall Holiday Camp. I used to work in one (as a chef) so I know how accurate it is. Some of the things I saw would make even Timmy blush! Its the usual slap and tickle, enlivened by guest appearances from John Junkin, Colin Crompton and Lance Percival (whose role seems to have been written for Kenneth Williams!). Liz Fraser and Linda Hayden returned as different characters. Top marks to the cast for throwing themselves into the piece with abandon. It couldn't have been easy being filmed in bikinis and swimming trunks in March. 'Confessions Of A Plumber's Mate' was planned, but Columbia shut down film production here in the U.K. and it went unmade, dampening Timmy's ardour forever. Those who knock the 'Confessions' movies should take a look at the 'Adventures' series, now they really were dreadful. I hope they never try to revive 'Confessions; like the 'Carry On' films, they were of their time. Naughty but nice!

Description: Right heres the plot... Young Timmy Lea starts as a window cleaner in the little company of his brother in law Sid. Soon, he learns that some female customers expect additional service. Young and curious as he is, he reluctantly accepts the juicy duty. However his heart belongs to Liz, who demands the highest commitment until she lets him go all the way. I absolutely love this movie. It is a great example of 70s comedy at it's best. Its up there with on the Buses and Carry on. It was the first Confessions film I saw and as soon as I did I had to see the others. I must admit I like them all even though this is my favourite. Yeah, it is x rated, but it really is harmless fun and is great to watch if you feel like a giggle. Robin Askwith is great and really fits into his role as a real jack the lad. I give this film a 10 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of 70' nostalgia.

Description: The second of Ozu's war-era films -- and the first to feature Chishu Ryu as "star". This film starts with the story of a teacher and his young son (in the 1920s). After one of the students under Ryu's care drowns on a school outing (after disobeying orders), Ryu resigns as a teacher due to his "failure". Ryu and his son then must split up, the son to go to middle school and Ryu to go to Tokyo to pay for his son's education. Escape from Alcatraz is a straightforward , no nonsense kind of movie which is very rarely being made today. No gimmicks, no sex to speak of, and really it was a man's movie as I believe only one female appeared in the whole movie. Everyone was acting their all and even the bit part actors were in top form. It was exciting without being a bloodbath and I enjoyed seeing the movie again after many years. Nearly 2 hours of first class entertainment and look out for Danny Glover for what I believe is his first starring role.

The book "Nineteen Eighty-four" was destined to be a film. This movie is a perfect example of what films of today are missing. On too many occasions filmmakers pander to their audience by overstating the details of the "plot points" rendering the viewer mindless. Director Michael Radford (IL Postino) creates a disturbing world that is far too similar to the present. The film is about a government called "The Party" that uses the media coverage of a war as a way to manipulate the past, present and future of mankind as a form of control. Those who question the "reality" (the media) are called "traitors". For some this film may require a second viewing not because it is not comprehensive, but because the film its self purposely manipulates the viewer. Pure brilliance!
